The Importance of Your Jawbone

Most people never consider the significance of their jawbone until it’s too late. The purpose of your jaw is to support your teeth so you can bite and chew, but when you are missing teeth, the bone no longer has a purpose and begins to deteriorate. When bone loss occurs, your jawline will thin, causing a sunken-in appearance, your surrounding teeth become loose or shift and you will be restricted from having dental implants placed to replace the teeth. Bone grafting is a modern treatment that allows our oral surgeons to rebuild your bone volume to a healthy level in order to save your oral health and allow for implants to be placed.

After a tooth has been extracted, it leaves behind an empty socket in the jawbone where the tooth root was. Socket preservation bone grafting is used to pack the area with bone graft material and rebuild the jawline to prevent significant deterioration and shifting of teeth. It also allows for dental implant placement in the near future.

When your jawline is uneven due to bone loss, it can create an aesthetic concern to your facial appearance as well as cause teeth to shift out of alignment. Ridge augmentation restores the deteriorated or damaged area to balance out your face and allow for implants to be placed in order to restore missing teeth.

When you are missing teeth in the upper molar region there is often less bone volume due to the sinus cavity residing just above. Sinus lifts are treatments that gently lift the sinus cavity to allow our oral surgeons to place bone graft material. Once the bone has been built, implants can be placed with the appropriate amount of support.

While not a bone grafting technique, plasma rich growth factors (PRGF) is material that is used to enhance and improve the bone grafting healing process. PRGF is a material composed from your own blood that promotes faster and safer healing of bone. This will cut down on your treatment times and get you to dental implants faster.
