Your oral soft tissue include virtually everything but your teeth and jawbone within your mouth. This includes your gums, tongue, lips, cheeks, and all the muscles that are connected to them. These soft tissues are very delicate and when you need to have treatments performed, choosing a team that cares about gentle, precise care is a must. At Western Pennsylvania Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery our oral surgeons offer modern soft tissue treatments for both gingivectomies and frenectomies. These treatments can benefit you both in a functional or cosmetic way depending on your needs or wants.
Gingivectomies involve the removal of diseased gum tissue from around your teeth. This treatment returns your mouth to proper health and can effectively save your tooth roots and jawbone from deterioration. Our practice performs gingivectomies with the BIOLASE® dental laser for a more gentle and safe treatment.
A tongue- or lip-tie is a common oral problem that restricts movement of the tongue or the upper lip. This frequently is treated in young children, but adults may receive frenectomies as needed. A frenectomy involves severing the connecting tissue that restricts movement of the tongue or lip. This results in improved movement for the tongue and proper positioning of the upper lip.
Whenever soft tissue treatments need to be performed, we always approach them in a very gentle manner as these are very sensitive tissues. Our BIOLASE dental laser allows us to offer gentle soft tissue treatment for those that require a gingivectomy. This solution uses gentle laser light instead of scalpels to remove the gum tissue and cleanse disease from the mouth. Treatment is simple and quicker than traditional care, requiring no scalpels or sutures and with minimal bleeding. For those with dental fear or anxiety, laser dentistry is a great alternative, but we also offer soothing sedation options to help put you at ease.

We have always exceeded the strict OSHA-mandated protocols to maintain a highly sterile environment within our offices. These guidelines were created to safeguard against the spread of severely contagious diseases such as tuberculosis and measles, and they are equally effective in managing the spread of influenza and coronavirus.
In addition we have added more rigorous disinfecting techniques and sterilize common areas more often. Our office has added a sanitizing system directly to our HVAC which “cleans” the air continuously for an added safety measure. We have minimized contact with staff as much as possible by utilizing the internet and phone contact when possible, and have added the option for some to do a virtual visit.
